Newspaper

This object for me cominicates society and information. Something that society creates to talk about society to society, i find this chain very interesting and it gives me many prompts for new ideas.

The object can easily be reworked, because of its flexibility and how light it is it can easily crumple up, be draped or pleated, exactly like fabric.

I feel like the narrative of the newspaper is pretty explicit. Newspapers talk about society to society. Because of this the idea of gender and gender roles is frequently pushed or discussed. My project consists of flipping the rigid outside of a menswear jacket and developing its much more soft interior, Talking about hoe gender roles are pushed on men.

String

This material is very interesting, being similar to string it communicates similar ideas, tying, connecting, uniting. But it is a lot less strong than string, it can be easily torn apart and broken.

This material can be reworked in many ways. Firstly more explicitly, it can be used with the same function of thread or string. To sow elements or tie them together. I also think that because of its width, if connected to many of its same elements it can turn into a textile|fabric. Lastly it can be used as a filler, stuffing to give form and dimension to a piece.

The narrative that i see in this material is an element that tries to hold things together but is actually not strong enough, not because it can’t but because maybe it wasn’t meant to in the first place. This, like the newspaper ties into the idea of toxic masculinity. How the masculine ideal is pushed onto men and many times it is discructive and ineffective, but because it shouldn’t have existed din the first place.

Plastic bin

This material, plastic and the form of a bin both communicate rigidness. Plastic is difficultly malleable and the form of a bin is designed to carry objects so it is made to not be easily broken.

I think that plastic can be a grate source of inspiration. For my project i wanted to use the firmness of plastic to make the skeleton of my garment. Because of its structure it can easily carry the weight of a garment, just like the form\function of a bin.

The material is difficultly reworked but with the right tools like saws etc you can shape plastic to exactly what you would want it to be.

The plastic of the bin can easily be intertwined with the plastic that i used from the chair in my project. It can be developed to create an opposing structure that serves as the skeleton to the rest of the garment .
